I want to decline this version, because of the unintended scenario when one player is just one move from the hill for 20 points, the other player can resign or forfeit on time for 10 points only.

Yeah, this variant relies on the dead grasshopper bug. However, replacing one piece with another does nothing. You have to create a new battery.
