MIAT
MIAT: A Large-Scale Strategic Chess Variant
Concept
MIAT is a large-scale chess variant focused on long-term strategy, positioning, army management, and battlefield control. It expands the traditional chess experience into a larger arena, requiring players to develop complex formations, secure key logistics, and execute patient, calculated advances.
The Board & Tactical Lines
The Battlefield: Played on a unique 140-square rectangular board. This massive space increases the distance between the two armies, allowing players to build and structure their forces before the lines clash.
The Frontlines (5th & 6th Ranks): Counted from each player’s rear edge, these ranks act as the critical convergence zones. Like the center in orthodox chess, controlling these lines is essential to dictating the pace of the mid-game confrontation.
The Army & Pieces
Each player commands a massive army of 30 pieces, with 9 different pieces with specialized movement profiles and tactical roles.
The Royals: Led by the King Alibaba (Alibaba) (Y, combines alfil and dabbaba) and its highly mobile counterpart, the Queen Alibaba (Alibaba-Rider) (Z, moves any distance in any direction by repeatedly leaping over one square; occupied intermediate squares block further movement).
Specialized Units: The army features a diverse roster including:
•Hawk (Archbishop)→(H, combines bishop and knight);
•Elephant/Seirawan Elephant (Chancellor)→(E, combines rook and knight);
•Sergeant→(δ, moves 1 square in any direction except backward);
•Soldier→(β, moves 1 square orthogonally);
•Wazir (renamed as Bastion in MIAT)→(W, moves one square horizontally or vertically);
•Chariot (Rook)→(R, moves horizontally and vertically);
•Camel→(C, an elongated 3-1 knight).
Promotion & First Move: When a Sergeant successfully traverses the battlefield and reaches the 14th rank (the opponent's rear edge), it promotes into a Queen Alibaba (Alibaba-Rider). On the Sergeant's first move, he may optionally advance two spaces in any direction, except backward.
Origins & Lore
Evolution: MIAT is a refined, practical evolution of a massive concept originally designed by the author—a mega-battlefield composed of nine standard chessboards (a 3×3 grid with 576 squares and 72 pieces per player). MIAT compresses that grand scale into a playable, highly strategic format while keeping the deep, prolonged feel of an actual military campaign.
The Identity: Deeply inspired by Middle Eastern and Eastern heritage, the game incorporates thematic units like the Camel, Wazir, and Alibaba. The name "MIAT" derives from the phonetic resonance of an Arabic term associated with chess’s Eastern roots, adapted into a distinct modern brand.
Visual Recommendation
To experience MIAT as originally intended, the Neo piece set is highly recommended. It accurately captures the visual identity and unique design of each custom piece, preserving the game's specific atmosphere.

I tried to make a chess variant bigger than the normal chess ambiented in the Middle East, like it, but I have some things to improve in my next variant. I believe one day my variant will be accepted - not this one, but a better one.
